Christmas at the Cottage

Christmas at a cozy cottage is magical and fun. Your family can build new traditions to carry-on over the years to come and enjoy getting away from the hustle and bustle of the busy season, Here are some activities to keep you entertained while you spend time together.

Build a winter campfire

Campfires are not just for summer! For winter campfires the snow needs to be cleared from the fire pit.  Campfire wood needs to be dry, if it is not then using some fire starter can be helpful don’t forget, pine cones and bark can also be used as a source of kindling, Surround the fire with logs to dry them out for use the next time.

Go skating on the lake

Skating on the lake remains a Canadian tradition. Before you venture out, be sure to check the thickness of the ice. The ice needs to be at least 20 cm thick and checked in several spots. Shovel off the snow and for a smooth rink flood it at night. There are many flooding tools available or you can auger into the lake and draw water. There are also many public outdoor  skating trails to explore.

Build a snow sculpture

It doesn’t have to be a snowman, it can be anything you imagine! Check the weather, dress warmly and check to make sure the temperature is right for packing snow. You can use tools to help build blocks (recycling or storage bins or even a cardboard box will work). Pack the snow in and use chisels, scoops and sand toys to create your masterpiece. You can even use snow paint or markers to give the sculpture a finishing touch!

Hike

Some winters have more snow than others. While cross country skiing and snowshoeing are some of the best ways to get outside, if there is not enough snow it is good to just lace up your hiking boots and hit the trails. Also a good idea to take a walking stick and don’t forget the binoculars to look at wildlife and birds

Try dog sledding

If you are in the Haliburton area you can go sledding at the Haliburton Forest and Wildlife Reserve. No experience required and you get a guided tour. With over 300 km of trails you will enjoy a unique experience of adventure. You can warm up after by visiting the Wolf Centre for an educational experience about the forest, it’s wildlife and the chance to catch a glimpse of the Forest’s wolf pack in their 15 acre environment.

Have some indoor fun

And of course there are plenty of indoor activities while warming up inside.  The top board games noted by cottagers are Scrabble, Monopoly, Crokinole, Trivial Pursuit, Charades and of course the good old deck of cards. If games aren’t for you, there is nothing better than doing some baking and filling the cottage with the scent of fresh baked treats or gingerbread!
